RWJF Call for Proposals
A total of up to $500,000 is available for research grants through the Active Living Program. The deadline for proposals is Dec. 1, 2004.

AoA Enrolls Nearly 900 Partners in Campaign
The Administration on Aging is well on its way to reaching its objective of enrolling 2,000 organizations in the You Can! Steps to Healthier Aging campaign. New materials have been added to the toolkit, including Power Point slides for different audiences and consumer brochures.

AARP Online Course on Starting Physical Activity
A one-hour free seminar helps mid-life and older adults start exercises for a more active, healthier lifestyle. Keep Active, Get Moving at 50+

Older Adult Perspectives on Physical Activity and Exercise: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
A Preventing Chronic Disease Journal article, Vol 1: No. 4, Oct. 2004, discusses features of physical activity programs that enhance participation among ethnically diverse minority older adults. A few suggestions include providing culture-specific exercise, offering programs at residential sites, and educating families about the importance of physical activity for older adults.

New ACSM Exam and Certification for Personal Trainers
The American College of Sports Medicine developed an examination and certification for personal trainers to ensure that these professionals are well trained and properly prepared for the health and fitness industry.

New Online Program Promotes Physical Activity: NHLBI
The new program on the NHLBI website, “Physical Activity: Your Heart, Your Life,” is a training program for lay health educators to teach others about heart health and physical activity. The course is available in English and Spanish.

Model Health Promotion Programs that Target Cultural Communities: ASA
According to the American Society on Aging, the following two programs highlight effective ways to work with elders of specific cultural communities. A few of the core elements include, providing materials and sessions in the community’s language, obtaining buy-in from community leaders and building relationships in the community before talking about specific health promotion issues.
